Ο Νομός Έβρου βρίσκεται στο βορειοανατολικό άκρο της Ελλάδας, στο φυσικό σύνορο της χώρας με την Βουλγαρία στα βόρεια και την Τουρκία στα ανατολικά, αποτελεί δε το ένα από τα τρία τριεθνή σημεία που υπάρχουν στην Ελλάδα. Δυτικά συνορεύει με τον Νομό Ροδόπης, η πρόσβαση στον οποίον γίνεται μέσω της Εγνατίας Οδού και στα νότια βρέχεται από το Θρακικό πέλαγος. Χιλιομετρικά αποτελεί τον πλέον απομακρυσμένο νομό από την Αθήνα καθώς η πρωτεύουσα του νομού, Αλεξανδρούπολη, απέχει 840 χλμ. από αυτήν, 340 χλμ. από την Θεσσαλονίκη, 295 χλμ. από την Κωνσταντινούπολη και 60 χλμ. από την Κομοτηνή, που αποτελεί την έδρα της περιφέρειας ανατολικής Μακεδονίας – Θράκης. Ονομάστηκε Νομός Έβρου από τον ομώνυμο ποταμό, τον μεγαλύτερο των Βαλκανίων, που διασχίζει το βορειοανατολικό άκρο της Ελλάδας στα σύνορα. Είναι το φυσικό σύνορο της Ελλάδας με τις γειτονικές της χώρες Τουρκία και Βουλγαρία.

The Prefecture of Evros is located at the northeastern end of Greece, on the natural border of the country with Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the east, and is one of the three tri-ethnic points that exist in Greece. Rodopi prefecture to the west, access to which is made through Egnatia Highway and to the south it borders the Thracean sea.

Geographically, it is the ferthest prefecture from Athens, as the capital of the prefecture, Alexandroupoli, is 840 km away. from there, 340 km. from Thessaloniki, 295 km. from Constantinopolis and 60 km. from Komotini, which is the seat of the region of eastern Macedonia – Thrace. Εvros is named after the Evros river, the largest of the Balkans, which crosses the northeastern edge of Greece at the border. It is the natural border of Greece with neighboring countries Turkey and Bulgaria.

Η Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Ροδόπης αποτελεί μία από τις 74 περιφερειακές ενότητες της Ελλάδας. Πρωτεύουσα της ενότητας είναι η Κομοτηνή, η οποία είναι και πρωτεύουσα του γεωγραφικού διαμερίσματος της Θράκης, ενώ αντίστοιχα αποτελεί και έδρα της Περιφέρειας Ανατολικής Μακεδονίας και Θράκης.

Η Π.Ε. Ροδόπης ανήκει γεωγραφικά στη Θράκη. Βόρεια συνορεύει με τη Βουλγαρία (με την Επαρχία Κάρτζαλι), στα δυτικά του βρίσκεται η Π.Ε. Ξάνθης, ανατολικά η Π.Ε. Έβρου και στα νότια βρέχεται από το Θρακικό Πέλαγος, με μήκος ακτών περίπου 58 χιλιόμετρα. Στα βόρειο τμήμα της ενότητας βρίσκεται το ανατολικό μέρος της οροσειράς της Ροδόπης, στην οποία οφείλει την ονομασία της.

The Prefecture of Rhodope is one of the 74 regional units of Greece. The capital of the unit is Komotini, which is also the capital of the geographical department of Thrace, while it is also the seat of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The Prefecture of Rhodope belongs geographically to Thrace. To the north it borders Bulgaria (with the Kartzali District), to the west is the Regional Unit of Xanthi, to the east is the Regional Unit of Evros and to the south is the Thracian Sea, with a coastline of approximately 58 kilometers. In the northern part of the unit is the eastern part of the Rhodope mountain range, to which it owes its name.
