Η Δυναστεία των Κομνηνών ήταν μία ισχυρή οικογένεια ευγενών από την Κόμνη της Θράκης, που κυβέρνησε τη Βυζαντινή αυτοκρατορία από 1081 έως το 1185. Ιστορική είναι η μέχρι σήμερα διατηρημένη Μονή Παναγίας Κοσμοσώτειρα, που ιδρύθηκε από τον σεβαστοκράτορα Ισαάκιο Κομνηνό στην τοποθεσία Βήρα (πρόκειται για τις σημερινές Φέρες του Έβρου), κοντά στο δέλτα του ποταμού Έβρου.

Το ‘Τυπικόν Ισαακίου Αλεξίου Κομνηνού της Μονής Θεομήτορος της Κοσμοσώτειρας’ φωτίζει ακόμη, πτυχές της τοπικής μας ιστορίας.

Προσφέρει όλη την περιουσία του, κινητή και ακίνητη, στο μοναστήρι της Βήρας, καθιστώντας το έτσι ιδιαίτερα εύπορο και στηρίζοντας οικονομικά την αυτονομία του. Απέραντες εκτάσεις καλλιεργημένης γης με τους οικισμούς τους στο νότιο τμήμα της βυζαντινής Θράκης – που περιλάμβανε και μεγάλο τμήμα της πόλης της Αίνου -, 12 ποταμόπλοια που έφεραν έσοδα στο μοναστήρι, το απόλυτο δικαίωμα διαχείρισης των ποταμών ‘Μαρίτζα’ και Σαμία, καθώς και το Μετόχι του Αγ. Στεφάνου του Αυρηλιανού στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, περνούν στην κατοχή της Μονής.

Το Ιδρυμα ήταν μεγαλοπρεπές και ισάξιο των υπόλοιπων αυτοκρατορικών μονών της Οικογένειας των Κομνηνών ( Μονή της Χώρας Παντοκράτορος Χριστού). Ο κτήτορας Ισαάκιος Κομνηνός κατασκευάζει αρχικά το Καθολικό. Τις εργασίες παρακολουθεί ο ίδιος. Ο αρχιτεκτονικός του τύπος είναι σταυροειδής με τρούλο, σε μια – σπανιότατη – παραλλαγή του δικιονίου. Ο Γραμματικός του Μιχαήλ δίνει στο ναό την μεγαλοπρέπεια που του αρμόζει. Ο ναός , αν και μετρίου όγκου , γίνεται επιβλητικός χάρη στο εντυπωσιακό ύψος που του προσφέρει ο αρχιτέκτονας, μαζί με τον ιδιαίτερα μεγάλο τρούλο , τις σοφές αναλογίες των διαστάσεων, τη έλλειψη κιονοστοιχιών. Το έργο προκαλεί το θαυμασμό, όχι μόνο των συγχρόνων του, αλλά και των σημερινών μελετητών. Οι αγιογράφοι που φτάνουν από την Βασιλεύουσα αποτυπώνουν τη θεία ζωή της Παναγίας και του Χριστού με την αριστουργηματική τεχνοτροπία της Κωνσταντινουπολίτικης Σχολής.

Από τις αγιογραφίες που σώζονται ως σήμερα, ξεχωρίζουν αυτές στο κέντρο του ναού. Πρόκειται για ανεπίγραφες αγιογραφίες τεσσάρων στρατιωτικών αγίων, που έχουν ταυτιστεί με πρόσωπα της οικογένειας των Κομνηνών , περιλαμβάνονται και του κτήτορα. Το αστραφτερό μάρμαρο του δαπέδου, των κιόνων, του τέμπλου καθώς και η επένδυση χρυσού φωτίζουν το εσωτερικό του ναού μαζί με το πλήθος των παραθύρων. Ο ναός της Παναγίας της Κοσμοσώτηρας γίνεται περίλαμπρος και ο κτήτορας αποτυπώνει στο Τυπικόν την εντολή, ως τέτοιος να διατηρείται ανά τους αιώνες.

The Foundation was magnificent and equal to the rest of the imperial monasteries of the Komnenian Family (Monastery of Chora Pantokratoros Christou). The founder Isaac Komnenos initially builds the Catholicon. He supervises the works himself. Its architectural type is cruciform with a dome, in a – very rare – variation of the dikionion. The Grammar of Michael gives the church the magnificence that befits it. The church, although of moderate volume, becomes imposing thanks to the impressive height that the architect offers it, along with the particularly large dome, the wise proportions of the dimensions, the lack of colonnades.

The work arouses the admiration, not only of its contemporaries, but also of today’s scholars. The hagiographers who arrive from Vasilevousa depict the divine life of the Virgin Mary and Christ with the masterful style of the Constantinople School. Of the hagiographies that have survived to this day, those in the center of the church stand out. These are untitled hagiographies of four military saints, who have been identified with figures from the Komnenian family, including the founder. The sparkling marble of the floor, the columns, the iconostasis, as well as the gold plating illuminate the interior of the church along with the multitude of windows. The church of Panagia Kosmosotiras becomes resplendent and the founder imprints in the Typikon the command that it be preserved as such throughout the centuries.

Greek Orthodox Church (Greek: Ἑλληνορθόδοξη Ἐκκλησία, (Ellinorthódoxi Ekklisía), is any of three classes of Christian churches, each associated in some way with Greek Christianity, Levantine Arabic-speaking Christians or more broadly the rite used in the Greek Byzantine Empire

The broader meaning refers to “the entire body of Orthodox (Chalcedonian) Christianity, sometimes also called ‘Eastern Orthodox’, ‘Greek Orthodox’, or generally ‘the Greek Church’.

A second, narrower meaning refers to “any of several independent churches within the worldwide communion of [Eastern] Orthodox Christianity that retain the use of the Greek language in formal ecclesiastical settings”. In this sense, the Greek Orthodox Churches are the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and its dependencies, the Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem, the Church of Greece and the Church of Cyprus.

The third meaning refers to the Church of Greece, an Eastern Orthodox Church operating within the modern borders of Greece.

Historically, the term “Greek Orthodox” has been used to describe all Eastern Orthodox churches, since the term “Greek” can refer to the heritage of the Byzantine Empire.

During the first eight centuries of Christian history, most major intellectual, cultural, and social developments in the Christian Church took place in the Byzantine Empire or its sphere of influence, where the Greek language was spoken and used for most theological writings.

The empire’s capital, Constantinople, was an early important center of Christianity, and its liturgical practices, traditions, and doctrines were gradually adopted throughout Eastern Orthodoxy, still providing the basic patterns of contemporary Orthodoxy.

Thus, Eastern Orthodox came to be called “Greek” Orthodox in the same way that Western Christians came to be called “Roman” Catholic. However, the appellation “Greek” was abandoned recently by the Slavic and other Eastern Orthodox churches.

Thus, by the early 21st century, generally only those churches most closely tied to Greek or Byzantine culture and ethnicity around the world, were called “Greek Orthodox” in common parlance.

The Greek islands have been continuously inhabited by Greeks and have been significant for thousands of years, with human settlement dating back to the Neolithic period (c. 7000 BCE).

Major ancient civilizations like the Greek (Hellenic) Minoan (Crete), Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic, and Greek (Hellenic) Mycenaean cultures flourished on the islands, developing advanced art, architecture, and maritime skills, leaving behind a rich archaeological legacy. Today, the islands remain important cultural and historical centers, attracting visitors for their history, beauty, and unique way of life, like the famously long-lived population on Ikaria.

Some Greek islands are often located off the coasts of modern countries whose shores were already inhabited by Greeks before antiquity, such as the coasts of Asia Minor and northern Epirus. It was only in the 20th century that the displacement of Greek populations led to a change in the ethnic landscape: today, Greek-populated islands are situated near regions now inhabited by other ethnic groups, such as in Asia Minor and Northern Epirus.

The Aegean Sea of Greece (Hellas) is so blue due to a lack of phytoplankton and suspended particles, which allows sunlight to penetrate deep and scatter, reflecting the blue wavelength. Its clear, calm waters and a light-colored seafloor, often made of crushed marble, also contribute to its intense blue hue by reflecting light more effectively. The water itself also absorbs red and yellow light more than blue light, further enhancing the blue appearance, especially in large depths

One of the greatest creations of Greek Aegean civilization is its art, unique in its time, not only in the Aegean but also in the entire world. The austerity and inventiveness that characterize the artist of the Bronze Age are reflected in the artifacts he produces. Since that ancient era, the Aegean has been spiritually charged and is reflected in literature, poetry and art.

The Early Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic II (2700–2400/2300 BC) marks the heyday of the Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic civilization, with the expansion of settlements and cemeteries, the development of metalwork (bronze weapons and tools), the flourishing of marble sculpture (excellent figurines and vases) and an increase in trade exchanges with mainland Greece, Crete and the Aegean. The Early Greek Cycladic III (2300–2000 BC) is the last phase of the civilization, which is characterized by the decline and change in the characteristics of pottery.

The achievements of vase painting during the Early Greek Cycladic II and Early Greek Cycladic III periods and the introduction of polychrome in the decoration of Middle Cycladic vases certainly contributed to the emergence of painting as an important means of artistic expression. Thus, while the Early Cycladic period could be characterized as the century of sculpture for the Cyclades, the Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000–1650 BC), -Middle Cycladic- and the early Late Cycladic could justifiably claim the title of the century of great painting.
